Alcohol and drug evaluations are conducted by specially trained and certified professionals called addiction counselors, chemical dependency counselors, or substance abuse counselors. The term “addiction counselor” is the most common and refers to someone trained to provide counseling and therapy to people with substance abuse disorders. These counselors typically have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in counseling, psychology, or a related field.
Substance abuse counselors may also be certified by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC). To be certified, counselors must complete a rigorous education and training process and pass a comprehensive exam. Addiction counselors work in outpatient settings, such as substance abuse treatment centres, community mental health centres, and private practices. They may also work in inpatient settings, such as hospitals and residential treatment facilities.
